Washington, D.C. — Today, we mourn the passing of the Honorable Jesse Jackson — a towering figure in American history, a relentless champion for civil rights, and a drum major for justice whose voice stirred the conscience of a nation.

I had the profound honor of supporting Reverend Jackson during his historic presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988 — campaigns that expanded the American political imagination and brought millions into the democratic process. I proudly supported him in his role as District of Columbia Shadow Senator, where he continued his advocacy for representation and justice for the residents of our nation’s capital.

Reverend Jackson was more than a candidate. He was a movement. Through the founding of the Rainbow Coalition, he built bridges across racial, economic, and generational lines, teaching us that our strength lies in unity and shared purpose. He reminded the marginalized that they mattered. He lifted the fallen. He opened doors that had long been closed.

I will forever cherish the moments we shared. Reverend Jackson attended my DC Emancipation Day Prayer Breakfast at the Willard Hotel, standing in solidarity as we honored the legacy of freedom in the District of Columbia. We appeared together on Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., alongside my sister Honey, Felicia, and a dedicated campaign volunteer — a moment captured in a photograph that reflects not just a public gathering, but a bond grounded in shared struggle and shared hope.

At the African/African American Summit under the leadership of the late Reverend Leon Sullivan, we worked alongside one another to strengthen economic empowerment and international cooperation for people of African descent. His global vision matched his local commitment.

I also remember his thoughtful intervention during a spirited yet friendly exchange between me and the late John H. Wilson at the Panorama site in Ward 8 overlooking our beloved city. That was Reverend Jackson — always guiding, always steadying, always seeking reconciliation and forward progress.

His words — “I am somebody” — gave dignity to generations. His rallying cry — “Keep Hope Alive” — carried us through some of our nation’s darkest hours.

Reverend Jackson’s purpose in life was clear: to open doors, to fight injustice, and to affirm the humanity of all people. His love for his people, and indeed for all humankind, will forever remain in our hearts.

Though his physical voice may now be silent, the echo of his courage and compassion will resonate for generations to come.

We give thanks for his life. We honor his mission.
And we will continue the work.

Keep Hope Alive.
